Qualifications and Experience
Dr Karen Faulds, EdD, MA Ed, PGCE, BSc(Hons), CCET, Dip SpLD, ADG will conduct all assessments and training. Karen is a qualified and specialist teacher with more than 20 years experience working with children, has been awarded the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society (GBC), and is an associate member of the Dyslexia Guild.
She began her career in education as a tutor with the London Academy of Pre-School Education, while studying for a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. This was followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education with a maths specialism, and more than twenty years working in the independent sector as an infant teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator, teaching mainly in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. She is very experienced in assessing children with additional learning needs across the primary years, as well as devising and implementing appropriate interventions.
Between 2006 and 2008, she studied Early Years Education and Early Literacy and Oracy, as well as Reading and Spelling Difficulties, at the Institute of Education (UCL IOE). This was followed by Doctoral studies and research at the Institute of Education from 2008 to 2015, with particular interest in the impact of vocabulary instruction on writing, and links between Working Memory development and the effects of early onset glue ear. She is also interested in the effects of auditory processing disorders on phonological awareness and reading, and potential remedies in the form of intensive computer-based language and literacy programs.
In 2011 she became a Cogmed Coach and has assisted a large number of children to complete their training successfully. In October 2012 she was invited to present at the Cogmed and Working Memory Inaugural Annual Conference.
She has recently completed additional training to update her assessment and specialist teaching skills, with the Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (British Psychological Society Register of Qualifications in Test Use: Educational Ability and Attainment) and the Dyslexia Matters Diploma in Teaching Learners with Dyslexia, Specific Learning Differences and Barriers to Literacy.
